Must imported goods be marked with country of origin?
Yes. Almost all foreign products must be marked in English in a conspicuous place (e.g. “Made in China”). The mark must be permanent, clear, and remain visible until it reaches the ultimate purchaser. If packaging could imply another origin (such as a US city name), the true origin must appear nearby in comparable size.

What are the mandatory requirements for wood packaging?
All solid wood packaging (pallets, crates, dunnage, etc.) must meet ISPM 15: heat treatment (HT) or fumigation (MB), with a visible IPPC mark (country code, treatment provider number, and method). Non-compliant wood packaging can result in the entire shipment being refused and possibly returned immediately.
-
What is a Customs Bond, and is it required?
Yes. Most formal entries require a customs bond. It is a guarantee to CBP that duties and penalties will be paid. Bonds are either single-entry or continuous (usually annual). Without a valid bond, CBP will not release the cargo. Bond amount is typically based on estimated annual duties.

What key information must a commercial invoice include for smooth clearance?
The invoice must be in English and accurately state: a precise goods description, quantity, value, and the eight-digit HTSUS number, plus the seller’s or manufacturer’s full name and address. Common rejection reasons include vague descriptions (e.g. “accessories” only), undervaluation, or an HTS code that does not match the cargo.

What is an Importer of Record, and who can serve as one?
The Importer of Record is the party legally responsible for the imported goods and customs clearance. Eligible parties include the owner, the purchaser, or a licensed customs broker authorized in writing. A “nominal consignee” who only holds the bill of lading (such as some freight forwarders) usually cannot serve as IOR because they lack a financial interest. If you are not a US entity, you may apply to CBP for a Customs-Assigned Importer Number (CAIN).
